An intruder who broke into a tractor dealers was trapped by his DNA after cutting himself on broken glass.

Stuart Morgan, 40, was high on Valium when he stole £120 and two bottles of alcohol from a portable building at the yard in Tiverton, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Morgan, of Old School Close, Tiverton, admitted burglary and was jailed for six months, suspended for two years and ordered to undergo drug rehabilitation as part of a two-year supervision order.

The court was told he had a long record of 110 offences.

Judge Barry Cotter, QC, told him that he risked a long jail sentence if he did not take this final chance to give up crime.

He said: "The only way society is going to be protected from your offending is if you can deal with your addiction.

"This is your chance. If you don't take it you will find I am remarkably unsympathetic."

Warren Robinson, defending, said Morgan was determined to overcome his drug problem so he could enjoy a normal family life with his partner for the first time.
