Plymouth police officer Ryan Canning, who was on duty overnight, said it was 'very, very busy'.

He advised motorists to keep their speed down and says there is standing water on many roads across Plymouth - including the A38.

He said: "If you are travelling anywhere by road anticipate standing water - take care on bends and in country lanes. Keep your speed down."

Plymouth was battered by heavy rain and high winds over night with debris and branches brought down and some roads flooded.

Officers were called to a crashed car on the A38 at Manadon at about 1am.

And police were sent to the scene of a crash on a lane near the A38 between Plympton and Shaugh, about half a mile past Woodside, where a car had overturned after hitting water.

Ryan Canning said: "The car was travelling within the speed limit but was rolled after hitting a pool of water on an unlit country road. Luckily there were only minor injuries."

“The plonkers on the road at the moment is horrific.

    Drivers are consistently:
    1. NOT using their indicators before changing lanes or turning.
    2. Pulling-in inside other drivers braking areas when it is very wet and still chucking it down.
    3. Being aggressive in their driving to the point of zooming through red lights on Marsh Mills.

All of the above I personally witnessed yesterday by two seperate drivers coming down the slip road from the A38 westbound towards Marsh Mills roundabout.

I was tempted to get out of my friends vehicle to take photos of the White van and red sporty car who appeared to me to be very careless/dangerous drivers who sooner or later WILL kill someone. I think next time I will.”

“Paperlantern - I think it's good that the Police rasie awareness of accidents and the causes. It's a good reality check for all drivers, shows what can happen with just one rainy night.I've just read the Twitter account and the driver of the car shown here gave permission for the pictures of his car to be used. It's actually a really good Twitter account.”

“It is a common fallacy that roads are dangerous. The process of making roads 'safer' by making them straighter, smoothing-out bends, removing 'dangerous' trees etc. only encourages the idiots to drive faster. Add to the mix cars with increased power-to weight ratios, low cabin noise plus ABS, stability control, air-bag, seatbelts etc. and the idiots will eventually drive so fast that nothing can possibly save them.

Making roads seem dangerous is one way of making these idiots slow down. I don't care if the idiots kill themselves, it's the innocents they take with them.

“I didn't know the Police were allowed to 'tweet' road accidents. Just an opinion, makes me a bit uneasy though.”

“In bad weather; slow down. Put (dipped) headlights on. Leave a gap between you and the vehicle in front in case they do something stupid. Read the road ahead. Hardly rocket science is it. Roads themselves are not "dangerous" - the way some people use them is.
70mph on the A38 can be perfectly safe in clear, dry conditions: throw in some rain, fog, ice, or snow and 30mph can be suicidal.
"Don't drive faster than your angels can fly !!"”

“Your right Waltersmith, but unfortunately you can aquaplane at 30mph, I know as I did just that last year, and again on the A38 at 50 mph, then slowed a bit more but still aquaplaned a few seconds later. It's the road surface design, they can build them with an arch but don't. They can also build in drainage channels but don't. It's down to cost at the end of the day. I pay road tax and expect that to be spent on the roads, not added to the governments coffers. Taking my money under false pretenses if you ask me.”

    “@paulmh66

In France there is an automatic 10kph reduction in the speed limit in poor driving conditions.

As the A38 is a badly designed road I suggest a 50mph max speed limit backed up by those speed cameras used at roadworks on the m-way. It is apparent that both the road and a large number of people who use it are dangerous”
