Call for diversion plan
THE chairman of Brixham Town Council has raised the issue of access to the town in the event of an accident.
Cllr Brian Harland wrote to Torbay Council's highways chief Patrick Carney, saying: "Any major accident affecting the main road into Brixham (A3022) has serious implications for traffic movement into and out of the town."
He gave examples of when accidents have caused congestion and/or diversions, such as at Windy Corner on August 27 and near the go-karts on September 14. He explained that when buses are diverted it causes problems due to the narrowness of the roads.
Cllr Harland asked whether a risk assessment or contingency plan existed. He also asked: "Does it make sense to build more houses in Brixham when the main road is so vulnerable to closure following an accident?"

Rob Ketch, on behalf of Mr Carney, responded: "We are always encouraged to provide sustainable development whereby residents of Brixham can work, shop, be educated and spend leisure time on a day to day basis in Brixham if they choose to.
"Due to the facilities that Brixham has, I would not see a need to restrict development based on the likelihood of an unplanned event.
"All planning applications are considered on their own merit and whether they are in accordance with the Local Plan, but generally the effects of development are considered when the network is operating in normal circumstances."
The matter was raised at the last Brixham Town Council meeting where councillors were told there is a diversion plan that can be implemented when a closure is required.
Mr Ketch's letter stated: "The diversion involves asking Brixham-bound traffic to use Kennels Road, Kingswear Road and Milton Street and Paignton-bound traffic to use Copythorne Road and Bascombe Road."
