The Co-operative is calling for Exeter City fans to show their true colours by starring in a new poster campaign marking the tenth anniversary of the club’s mutual ownership model.

Since becoming a fan-owned club, the Co-operative has provided ongoing support for Exeter City. A grant of £20,000 to the academy in 2010 benefited six groups of young players from under 9s to under 14s, providing training kit, facilities and qualified coaching to more than 150 boys. Since then the retailer has pledged a further £8,000 in support of the club’s academy.

In 2011, the Co-operative announced a new ‘Share of the Profits’ scheme, meaning member customers could opt to donate all or part of their annual dividend to their favourite team. It also worked with the club to launch the Small Schools Cup, a tournament allowing rural schools to compete on a regional level.

The poster project promises to propel a dedicated fan to fame with their photograph taking pride of place across the city.

Exeter City and representatives from the Co-operative want to hear from fans who have taken their love for the game and co-operation to a new league. It might be stories of unrivalled commitment to the club, it could be a fan that goes the extra mile to help someone else enjoy the beautiful game, or even a family who have ensured Exeter City stays in their blood for generations.

As well as a professional photo shoot with an Exeter City player, the ultimate fan will be treated to an exclusive VIP package at St James’s Park, including a pre-match dinner and drinks with the directors, two seats in the Flybe stand, the chance to attend the man of the match presentation, and a signed football shirt. They will also receive £100 of Co-operative Food vouchers.

Gareth Dempster, from the Co-operative, said: “Having been involved with Exeter City for several years now, we’re excited to be kick-starting a campaign to find the most co-operative fan in the field to help mark this important milestone.

“As the UK’s largest mutually-owned business, it has been great to work with Exeter City and to see how the co-operative model can benefit all different kinds of organisations.

“People bring to life the principles of co-operation every match day, even the gestures like helping a neighbour get to the game can make a real difference, so I’m looking forward to hearing the stories that come in.”

Club chief executive Julian Tagg said: “Mutual ownership helped to stabilise the club after a turbulent period, and co-operation has become an integral part of our ethos ever since. Because our fans own their club, they are fantastically dedicated supporters and we’re looking forward to elevating one of them to become an ambassador for the club for their help and co-operation in this poster campaign.”

For a chance to become Exeter City’s face of co-operation, fans should send their name, address and up to 100 words outlining their examples of co-operation or dedication to the club to membership.sw@co-operative.coop or to The Co-operative, Limesfield, Broad Road, Dulford, Cullompton, EX15 2DY.

The deadline for entries is Friday, March 15.

Entries will be judged by representatives from the Co-operative from Exeter City FC and the winner will be selected as the best example of bringing co-operation and dedication to the club to life.
