THE extreme weather in the past weeks, plus the failure of Plymouth Council to clean and maintain public drains and sewers can only mean one thing to the people of Plymouth.

This council has spouted on long and hard it does not have the money in its budget, so it sees fit to cut services, which causes even more of a strain.

With ever-increasing food prices and wages not rising to balance things out, all of us will be facing an even bigger struggle to make ends meet. At this point I have to say that while those in the lower bracket do, in all fairness really feel the cuts, I do not see this seemingly affect those who are in the higher wage brackets, so to these, cuts are ineffectual. Meanwhile, the blood and guts of the city I feel will have to face up to yet another rise in expenses, because despite all the talks about caps on rates etc. and we don't want to see increases, I'm afraid it is something that is going to happen.

I don't see Plymouth surviving in the present situation with this city falling into disrepair in all areas. Sections of Plymouth are becoming an eyesore, with no attempts to set things right. Re 'Time to restore this Barbican treasure': this is just one instance of many in Plymouth today. I feel that some time soon now, Plymouth will have to bite the bullet and face a rise in our rates in an effort to put Plymouth back on the mend.

I'm sure that, providing any increase is not astronomical we, as residents will cope. We usually do! Having said that, maybe our councillors will see their way clear to make their own sacrifices in the way of expenses as the other residents do, who don't have these perks of the job. Sorry people but I feel this council will say that 'it has no option but to increase the rates for 2013 - 2014' or go bust! Reality is not always the best of issues to face up to.
