Some great New Year's resolutions
With the New Year next week, I know lots of people will be looking to make a change to their habits and thought I would share the top ten tips from the lifestyles team. In fact, around seven million of us will make a New Year's resolution to improve an aspect of our health
Use the NHS Lifecheck to check your eating, drinking and activity habits. It just takes a couple of minutes and gives you tailored advice for your age, gender and lifestyle. A few moments spent now could add years to your life. www.nhs.uk/lifecheck
Stop smoking! If you are someone who struggles to achieve their resolution then seek help from qualified health professionals. Call the Torbay Stop Smoking service on 01803 299160 to make an appointment.
Keep active. As my last article highlighted, walking can reduce your risk of illness and is good for your mental health.

Limit your alcohol intake. Aim to have at least two alcohol free days a week. When drinking consider alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Look after your mental health by looking after your relationships, giving to others (even a smile or a thank you) and being aware of how you are feeling.
Attend screening appointments you are invited to as these are important ways to spot issues early.
Eat a healthy balanced diet based on starchy foods such as rice and pasta; with plenty of fruit and vegetables; some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish and lentils; some milk and dairy foods; and not too much fat, salt or sugar.
Smile and keep your teeth in good order. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and have regular check-ups.
Look after your sexual health by checking our local website www.sdhct.nhs.uk/aboutus/services/sexualmedicineservice
Making the smallest healthy change to your lifestyle can bring great benefits to your health, your confidence and self esteem.
If you would like any help with the above and don't know where to start then contact the healthy lifestyle team on 01803 208 840 or e-mail torbaylifestyles@nhs.net
