POTHOLE Pete has again been spotted out and about – this time inspecting road surface problems in Hartley.

Heather Ahern, a resident in Tor Crescent, had informed the Herald's in-house road campaigner about the state of surfacing in Glentor Road, her neighbouring street.

"The Council came out and shut the road for two days and did work, but they've left it in a complete mess. It looks awful – it's a disgrace."

She said her neighbours were also angry, especially when considering how steep council tax charges were.

She added: "We pay all this money for roads and now it looks like this – they shouldn't have bothered."

A Plymouth City Council spokesperson said: "We are aware of an issue at Glentor Road and have recently carried out repair works in November and December 2011.

"Following new reports of road surface defects, we carried out an inspection on Friday February 17 but found no defects requiring immediate attention.

"Glentor Road has been added to our works programme, which is prioritised based on a number of criteria, including road user safety, number of potholes, degree of cracking, ride quality (bumpiness), needs of local businesses, amenities, schools and public transport."

“Yes lilwead,I use Shakespeare road a lot,and I have commented before on the disgraceful condition of it,particularly the lower end, where I have also commented on the "Off road"parking. As you say, plenty of material for building islands in the middle of the road, but not for the actual surface, which is surely what we pay our road fund(tax) for,to have decent roads to drive on.”

“15 months down the line and we've still got 'temporary' drain covers since the theft of the cast iron grids. One of those is bent, always moving, and the drain is blocked. Despite me contacting the council about it on 13/01/2011 and contacting the Herald about middle of last year, absolutely nothing has been done. Now the street is developing more potholes again. Rongreenblood.....you're right about the pink concrete rds around Honicknowle. I remember when we had what seemed like 20 yrs of roadworks on the A38 near Ivybridge. for the resurfacing of the concrete section there! Have you tried negotiating Shakespeare Rd lately? Since the new school was built and all the heavy lorries were using it, it's little more than a cart track with shiny new slalom markers....sorry, crossing islands.....dotted amongst the damaged rd.”

“The trouble with the roads in Honicknowle,Burns ave,Byron, Dickens etc.is that they were laid with concrete originally, they were a bit rough, but lasted for years, but they have been covered with tarmac about 10-20 millimetres thick which does not last, and is always breaking up.It wasn't broke, but now it needs fixing.”

“Ride quality, or "degree of bumpiness" (presumably a civil engineering technical term) should be measured by the lowest ride height car available in the UK being driven over it at the speed limit for thae road in question. The same criterion should be used when installing speed humps.”

“Just to add, if the road tax collected is not going into the road repairing/building funds, is that not fraud? or out and out theft? It's wrong for sure.”

“There was 1 in Maida Vale Terrace that was repaired a few months ago, 3 feet away from that 1 there was another, but sadly it was left as it was not "marked" for repair.
Surely, if AMEY had took a pic. before, then a pic. after they can get paid for it???
And the 1 that was repaired has now "sunk" so needs doing again. I think the work is being done sub standard to keep them in work.
Does PCC not inspect the work after it's been done??”

“Does the local authority contact with Amey for highway repairs include a time guarantee? (Normally 12 months)
It appears that many of the repairs have failed and if this is the case are the citizens of Plymouth getting value for money!
How are the political parties courting our votes in May going to address this situation?”
