Your letters: Public pressure can bring about change
You have performed a helpful service by printing the Saturday interview, giving those who occupy part of the cathedral grounds in Exeter an opportunity to raise important issues.
Can all those who are concerned about them, including the Cathedral authorities and the Diocesan Church and Society department, cooperate to decide how to take these questions forward? In an attempt to progress the discussion, does the Occupy group have specific objectives? What economic and political system is preferable to the present one? The more specific the objectives, the greater the chance of achieving them.
One international group of over 10 million members which already campaigns very effectively is Avaaz which organises internet petitions. It attracted over 100,000 signatures campaigning against Stephen Hester’s colossal bonus and may have been a factor in his decision not to accept it. Another example is their campaign against HM Revenue and Customs agreeing dubious deals with companies like Vodafone and Goldman Sachs which pay far less Corporation Tax than the normal rate, partly due to operating via tax havens. Avaaz invites the public to decide what its future priorities should be, so this would appear to be one suitable way forward for all who are concerned about these important issues.
