Two die in weekend crashes
TWO men were killed in early morning accidents yesterday.
A man died when his car crashed on the A38 at Saltash, while a motorcyclist was killed in bad weather in a collision involving a parked car in Plymouth in the early hours.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the first accident, between the Carkeel roundabout and Stoketon Cross, Saltash, shortly before 8.30am.
Police said the vehicle, a blue Peugeot 206, belonged to a 19-year-old Looe man. There were no other vehicles involved.
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw a blue Peugeot 206 in the Saltash area at around 5.30am on Sunday.
The incident caused gridlock for part of the morning, with the section of the main trunk road into South East Cornwall closed from Carkeel to Stoketon Cross for several hours.
Diversions were set up through Callington, which soon caused traffic to mount up.
One eyewitness told the Western Morning News "It was hectic here this morning.
"There were cars queued up onto Carkeel roundabout and very little was moving."
A spokesman for the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry committee said there were some delays before lunchtime, with traffic from Carkeel backed down towards the Saltash tunnel. There were also delays to ferry services.
However, much of the congestion had eased by midday when the westbound carriageway from Carkeel was reopened, the spokesman said.
The motorcyclist died after colliding with a parked car in atrocious weather in Plymouth.
His Kawasaki hit a BMW in Paradise Road, Stoke, at 4.30am.
Police said that residents of the nearby Lawson House bail hostel tried in vain to revive the man before paramedics arrived.
He was taken to Derriford Hospital but did not survive.
The accident happened on a straight stretch of the road opposite the City College Plymouth campus.
The motorcyclist hit a BMW which was parked outside houses, but the vehicle was left with minimal damage after the incident. Police shut the road for about seven hours to investigate the cause of the accident.
An officer at the scene said: "The gentleman suffered horrendous injuries. He was worked on by residents living in the street.
"The weather was atrocious at the time. The road was certainly wet."
Police have not yet released any further details of the dead man while they try and trace next of kin.
Officers were yesterday afternoon trying to trace the owner of the car, which is registered outside Devon and Cornwall.
Anyone with information about the incident on the A38 is asked to contact police on 08452 777 444 quoting reference number 295 061209.
