Last-minute try gives Maberley a hat-trick
TORQUAY U16s, started their Fishermen's Cup campaign in some style with a 67-20 win over Kingsbridge at Torre Valley North.
The young Tics scored six tries in the first half through Lewis Maberly (2), David Hogan (2), Jake Bolton and Jamie Harvey (2). Tom Dyer kicked three conversions.
Torquay made five changes in the second half but the tries kept on coming.
David Meek crossed twice, Hogan scored again and there was a debut try Sam Simmons, who has come over from Teignmouth where there is no U16 side this season.
On the last play Lewis Maberly received the ball 65 metres out and ran past five defenders for his third try. Mawgan Penrice kicked three conversions.
Torquay are at home to Newton Abbot on Sunday.
HAVING lost players during the summer, Brixham were unsure how they would perform in their Fishermen's Cup opener at Newton Abbot.
Any performance fears were allayed by a confident performance which produced a 29-3 win.
Coach Adam Mudge was pleased with the way the game went, saying: "Good individual performances made for an excellent team performance and the players are now busily preparing for the visit of Ivybridge."
Brixham applied early pressure and on 10 minutes No.8 Elliott Bryant broke the defensive line to crash over wide out.
Confident Brixham began putting some fantastic passages of play together only for Newton's defence to clear the danger on numerous occasions.
From the best move of the match, and after several phases of play, Brixham scored their second try with full-back Mac Lewis finishing off the move.
All Newton had on the board at half time was a lone penalty from Will Kempsford.
A third Brixham try arrived after the break when Bryant crashed over in the corner.
When Brixham scrum-half Jordan Green foiled his opposite number, flanker Sam Unwin was on hand to steal the ball and touch down under the posts. Tom Akery converted.
Newton had a better spell in the second half – especially in the forwards – but were unable to score.
With full time fast approaching, Akery scored near the posts, hurting himself in the process, leaving Craig Armstrong to slot the conversion.
Matt Harvey ruled the roost in the line-out for Brixham.
