Are mobile phones really worth the bill?
I WAS simply appalled to read that £578,000 was being spent by the council on mobile phones and Blackberry smart phones. This is of course not taking into account that, as an estimate, hundreds of people have been given laptop computers as well, which are then sold for a pittance when new ones are re-issued out every so often.
I appreciate the council has difficulty keeping in touch with staff and they, in turn, contacting the citizens of this city, but are there actually any checks to see the staff are not making personal phone calls on them.
We often hear the bleating by the council, blaming central government that they have no money for essential matters like the airport, but I bet that if you scraped the surface a bit more you will find this is the tip of the iceberg. I suspect millions are are being wasted simply because there are no checks on them. But it always appears that when money is tight, the staff themselves lose their jobs instead of looking inwards and seeing just exactly where all the money is going.
Is the council buying the cheapest products and shopping around and using their high buying power to be more competitive?

I know from my experience in the Navy, that millions of pounds of serviceable furniture is being broken up and burnt. Clothing worn only once burnt, when there was a dockyard laundry. New radar sets, still in their boxes put under the hammer. So it's not just the council which wastes taxpayers' money.
