Three new baby meerkats born at Dartmoor Zoo

Three adorable baby meerkats have been born at Dartmoor Zoo after years of trying – and members of the public are being given the chance to name them in a vote.

Two adult meerkats, Sue and Timon, had arrived at the zoo in spring 2010. But, said operations manager George Hyde, despite the pair getting on well and the fact Sue had previously given birth, nothing seemed to come of the pairing. That all changed last summer when newcomer Xena was introduced and immediately fitted in.

"We were apprehensive because meerkats are very territorial," said Mr Hyde. "But we were very careful and it seemed to work."

Xena gave birth to the triplets, a male and two females, just before Christmas and Sue quickly took over mothering duties.
