1,000 cars stuck in mud

Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 10:00

FESTIVAL-GOERS bore the brunt of the wet weather yesterday afternoon as more than 1,000 cars got stuck in the mud trying to leave a summer music festival.

Squelching mud, knee-deep in places, greeted more than 12,500 people as they tried to leave the three-day Beautiful Days music event, held in Escot Park, Devon.

Thousands of fans headed to the festival to see acts including Supergrass, Squeeze and the Levellers. The festival was launched in 2003 by the Levellers with the aim of creating "a community spirit".

The festival is named after one of the Levellers' most popular tunes, What A Beautiful Day. Twenty tractors were on hand from 9.30am to help the cars on their way but one fed-up festival-goer, Ali Kirby, was still left stranded in the mud and rain at 5pm.

Ms Kirby, aged 26, from Southampton, said: "I've been here for seven-and-a-half hours now. We tried to get out, but the mud was too thick.

"At first everyone was trying to push cars out of the mud but eventually everyone gave up and sat in their cars sheltering from the rain.

"I'm cheesed off as I've still got a four-hour drive to get home.

"Everyone is just covered from head to toe in mud, it's miserable out here," she added.
