Election Diary

With his newfound celebrity, Nick Clegg has been waxing lyrical about his TV viewing habits. He does not watch Coronation Street or EastEnders, appears not to be a fan of The X Factor and prefers Jonathan Ross over fellow broadcasters Sir Terry Wogan and Graham Norton. No doubt his favourite viewing at the moment is watching back his much-hyped leaders' debate performance.

A lot of campaign groups are organising election hustings, to grill would-be MPs on their stance on their pet subjects. The RSPB has several lined up in the Westcountry in the next week, prompting some candidates to do their own research in the field. Literally. "In preparation for tonight's RSPB hustings I went and spoke to some chicken owners," said Labour's Luke Pollard (South West Devon).

Tory party chairman Eric Pickles is "genuinely puzzled". He said: "I watched the debate on Thursday and like millions of others, I reached the conclusion that if Gordon Brown is the answer it must be a very rude question."

Quote of the Day

"To achieve things you sometimes make judgements you regret, but nothing has been done from the wrong motives. If I've made a mistake it's because I've made a mistake, not because I had the wrong motives."

– Gordon Brown
