In my opinion: Our only hope is that EU will collapse and self-destruct

Western Morning News

Within last week's columns of In My Opinion, Mr Adrian Hardy kindly listed out all the wonderful achievements heaped upon us by the blessed EU.

Does he really think that this country, left to its own self determination, would not have developed any worthwhile achievements or changes to our lifestyle through its own natural progression over the last 40 years, for far less cost and suffering to the peoples of this land, without the patronising interference of the EU?

Britain (alas no longer Great) has an enviable record of bringing civilisation, culture and prosperity to the vast lands of America, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and India, so I am sure we would have worked out our own solution to improve the quality of life here for ourselves and within the rest of the world. And to a much better standard than that which we have to endure now.

What Mr Hardy has failed to list for us are the disadvantages of being ham-strung by such a wasteful corrupt organisation, since this would probably have taken the rest of the page.

In particular he has not told us of the great advantage of unlimited immigration which has now created vast swathes of immigrants diluting our health systems, welfare, education, and employment to breaking point which our forefathers fought for, sacrificed for, worked for and paid for and now so glibly given away to so many people who have contributed nothing towards them.

Mr Hardy has also failed to explain to us the huge benefit coming to us on January 1 2014 when the UK will open its doors to unlimited numbers of people from Romania and Bulgaria, simply because the EU says so.

29 million people will be entitled to come here – not just to work, but to take advantage of our benefits, housing, schools and health systems. Half of Bulgarians live in real poverty, while Romania has major social problems. Both countries suffer from institutionalised crime and an unstable grip on democracy and the law.

If we are going to keep the National Health Service free, prevent house-builders from concreting over the countryside, protect our pensioners and young people seeking work, something must be done.

But fear not, only this week I heard on the Classic FM Radio News that the UK Government has a firm grip of the problem with a strong and resolute strategy to deter unwelcome immigrants. They are to mount an extensive advertising campaign in those countries to tell any would-be immigrants that it rains a lot in Britain. The only real solution to these problems is to rid ourselves of this blessed EU, a wretched failed experiment in politics and economics. Unfortunately, this is not going to happen under the useless political leadership on offer to us at this time. Our only hope is that the whole thing will collapse and self-destruct.

“So, according to the author of this rubbish (John Merrett of Plymouth): "...Our only hope is that the whole thing will collapse and self-destruct...". Okay then what? Economic meltdown on a scale which makes the current mess look like a stroll in the park, that's what.

This is just the sort of thing that the far left was predicting about Western Democracy in the 1940's and 1950's. Now it's the turn of the ultra-right who, as exemplified here -

    1. Quickly turn to scapegoats by blaming foreigners for our ills - just the sort of nasty bile put out by the authorities in pre-war Germany.

    2. Invoke their rose-tinted glasses by alluding to the British Empire.

    3. Bizarrely claim that millions of foreigners are on their way to the UK with the sole aim of claiming welfare benefits - conveniently forgetting that, under its subsidiarity rules and just like other nations who are members of the EU, we can and do impose both "contribution" and "residency" tests to restrict entitlement to welfare. What UKIP won't tell you of course is that less than 1% of social housing is occupied by so-called migrants.
