A BY-ELECTION to replace Cllr Vic Ellery on Brixham Town Council could take place on the same day as the elections for the new police commissioner.

Cllr Ellery quit his role on the council he helped set up because of a conflict of interest with his new role as director of charity Brixham Does Care.

His resignation left a vacancy and now enough electors have called for by-election for the Berry Head with Furzeham seat. Brixham Town Council has decided to hold the vote on the same day as the police commissioner's election on November 15 in a bid to save tax payers' money.

It costs about £10,000 to stage a by-election. A publication of notice will happen today with nominations closing on October 19.

The spokesman said: "Ten electors need to call a by-election and they have. We have heard rumours of people being interested in the role but we won't know until they are announced on October 23."

The town council spokesman said if only one person is interested in the role, then no election will take place which saves even more money.

“Quite right, BrixhamTom. Brixham Council was created to make the voice of Brixham people heard, even if it was ultimately ignored. This lot seem to have elevated procrastination into an art form, maximising the amount of effort required to make even trivial decisions, and acting as a "rubber stamp" for their masters at Torbay Council. All at the taxpayers (additional) expense.”

“... or we could just do away with the town council, which would save us even more money!!”
