It has secured £2.2 million in backing for the project from the ERDF Convergence Programme.

The new facility will secure the roles of nine existing WPD staff on site and it's anticipated it will create a further nine jobs by 2015.

Midas Construction has been appointed as the main contractor on the job, which is due to be completed by the end of this year. Business Location Services Ltd of Truro undertook the preparation of the ERDF Convergence funding application on behalf of WPD.

WPD's property manager David Withers said: "The project represents a substantial investment in Cornwall and the Tolvaddon site, and will secure Western Power Distribution's position as a major employer in the local economy.

"We are delighted to have secured the ERDF Convergence grant funding, which was a critical element of the funding package for the project."

Chris Pomfret, deputy chairman of the Convergence Local Management Committee said: "This is a great example of the private sector benefiting from ERDF Convergence investment opportunities."

Gareth Beer, director of development for the Cornwall Development Company, which supported WPD in its ERDF application, said "The investment in this important gateway site to Pool demonstrates how well public and private partnerships can work in practice."
