Interest rates likely to remain at 0.5%

Bank of England policymakers were expected to stay on the sidelines yesterday amid signs the UK economy can still avoid a triple-dip recession.

Economists predict the Bank's nine-strong Monetary Policy Committee will keep interest rates at 0.5% and continue to keep its quantitative easing programme on hold, as it waits to see if its Funding for Lending Scheme and a recent fall in the price of sterling will boost the economy. Recent figures suggest the economy slipped back into the red in the final three months of last year.
