A GROUP of Barnstaple firefighters are the latest to sign up for the North Devon Hospice's first PJ Day.

To support the local charity, the crew will be wearing their favourite pyjamas to work on Friday, October 22. But they will be changing into their regular gear should they need to tackle any emergencies.

Gary Henry, blue watch manager at Barnstaple Fire Station said: "Fire-fighting and pyjamas don't generally mix, but when we're at the station we will be wearing our best slippers, dressing gowns and night caps.

"PJ Day will be a real laugh and, although I got some funny looks from the lads when I suggested it, they are all on board because they know it's for a good cause.

"Everybody knows someone who has been cared for by North Devon Hospice, whether that's a friend, family member or a neighbour. That's why it's important for us to support them because you never know when you might need their help."

PJ Day is a new event where, for a suggested donation of £2, people across the area will spend their day at work or school in their nightwear.

All funds will go to the North Devon Hospice.

Rebecca Worth, from the hospice's fundraising team, said: "This day promises to be so much fun, and we're thrilled that the Barnstaple fire crew have signed up to take part.

"It will be hilarious to see these big, strong chaps in striped pyjamas and fluffy slippers."

On the day, there will also be a North Devon Hospice travelling bed, provided by furniture retailer Padfields, which will take hot chocolate to all those involved.

A photographer from the Journal will also capture all the best moments from the day.

Rebecca said: "Wearing your PJs to work might seem a bit daft, but by getting involved you will be making a real difference to the lives of local people.

"Every pound raised during PJ Day will go towards providing our free care and support to people in our own community."

PJ Day takes place on Friday, October 22.
