Whisper it quietly, but there is a chance the Exeter Chiefs could end this season having won the treble.

The Devon side are still in the running for Aviva Premiership glory, they are in the last eight of the Amlin Challenge Cup, and they could reach the next stage of the LV= Cup with victory over Bath on Sunday.

It would take a Herculean effort to achieve that feat, but, along with Saracens, who are still in the Heineken Cup, they are one of only two English clubs with the potential to create rugby history.

However, no one at Sandy Park is ruling it out, even if it does sound a little far fetched. As Mark Foster says, though, the sky is the limit for the upwardly-mobile Chiefs.

“I did laugh at that slightly, but the sky is the limit,” the 28-year-old wing said.

“When you look at how far we have come in two years, who says we can’t go on exponentially from here?

“That is a huge testament to how far the club have come as a whole, how driven the boys are, and how good the management are to succeed on all fronts.

“I think we need to dream. We have seen the potential and, the more we play and the more consistent it becomes, the more the fans are starting to enjoy the brand of rugby we are playing.

“Rob [Baxter] has put it in our hands. If we want it, it is there for us.

“They can’t go out and play for us, but they give us all the tools in the gym and on the training pitch, but we know that, when it comes down to it, it is 15 versus 15 and 80 minutes.

“The guys are doing their best to prepare them but it is down to us to see how far we go with it.”

Before anyone gets ahead of themselves, though, those hopes could be dashed before a ball has even been thrown if weekend results do not go their way.

Exeter are relying on Wasps to do them a favour against Northampton tomorrow as a bonus-point win for the Saints would end the Chiefs’ hopes of glory in the LV Cup.

Then it would be up to the Chiefs to beat their Westcountry rivals Bath on Sunday to progress.

However, with a favourable set of fixtures in the Premiership to come and a place in the last eight of the Amlin Cup already guaranteed, there is much for the Chiefs to look forward to, especially as they go into Sunday’s game high on confidence, having won all of their last four matches.

“Winning is a habit and we would like to continue winning,” Foster said.

“We will do everything we can to continue winning and it is also a big home game, it is on TV, it gives a chance for all the guys on the pitch to showcase themselves.

“To be a successful side now, it is crucial to have 45 guys fit so the coaches can pick at will, and that means, when it comes to the big crunch games and potentially the play-off and the latter stages of Europe and the cup, they can really start to tailor sides.

“It can be horses for courses, if they want size they can pick bigger guys, if they want pace, they can pick quicker guys – there are so many variables and permutations within the squad now and that’s what you want.

“You are only as good as your last game and we pride ourselves on preparing for every game.

“It is more about rotation now and freshening guys rather than resting guys in preparation for the latter part of the season.”

First up is a clash with Bath, a side Exeter have struggled to overcome since their promotion to English rugby’s top flight.

“Bath is always a tough fixture, it has developed into a South West derby and a bit of a grudge match,” Foster said.

“They after a very similar sort of club with passionate supporters, a fantastic history and following.

“It is going to be tough, it is cup rugby now, but, like I say, they are always a very passionate side and tough to beat with a lot of strength in depth, just like us.

“Regardless of the side that take to the field at the weekend, it will always be a bit of a bloodbath.”
