The Bill introduces measures to reduce burdens on ports and the shipping industry and improve safety for vessels in harbours and seas around the Westcountry and the UK.

It includes provisions governing pilotage, the management of harbours and the powers and duties applicable to harbour authorities, port constables and the General Lighthouse Authorities.

Ms Murray yesterday thanked MPs for allowing her private members bill to make progress. The proposal includes a number of other measures to update regulations and help make ports around the UK more able to balance their rights and obligations against their workload.

Ms Murray's proposals are supported by the Government and were endorsed yesterday by Transport Minister Stephen Hammond. Peers must review the plans before they become law.

“I really don't get it with this woman. There are issues such as high SWW water charges, fuel tax going up in January and other issues that affect South west residents and she picks these things.
Support the bill by all means but get your name behind other issues as well, don't just ignore them and go and spend your expenses in the boozy Commons bar. Have a go at Cameron and Co and fight for the south-west.”
