Why can't we keep our wheeled bins?

I WAS interested in reading your article (HE, August 27), regarding the new recycling system, and particularly Nick Bye's comments that where Torbay generally seem to be dissatisfied with these new arrangements, Teignmouth residents appear to be less complaining.

Could the reason be Teignmouth still have their wheeled bins?

One of the greatest concerns within Torbay appears to be the boxes have no protection from the weather and are so small some families will not be able to fit their waste into them; also the boxes are cumbersome — how many of us have room to accommodate them without them being obtrusive? I certainly don't have!

Why can't we retain our wheeled bins and put our waste straight into them as appropriate and do away with the black boxes?

I can also see a problem for the residents who have no front gardens and have to put them straight onto the pavement causing a possible hazard for wheelchairs and baby buggies, to say nothing about visually-impaired people.

There has been much discussion recently about cutting down on pavement furniture.

Surely, the council should also be addressing this problem.

Nick Bye may well point out that for those with no front garden it will still be necessary to put them on to the pavement, but at least wheeled bins, being taller, will be more obvious to pedestrians.

Personally, I hate waste of any kind, so can see the need to recycle more and sincerely hope that once we are over the teething troubles, this scheme will work smoothly and before too long we will be able to recycle all plastic waste.

I wish them well, but feel they do need to rethink some of the present arrangements.

“I contacted Tor2 about having to store a bin and boxes outside of my house which fronts directly onto a road and has no other storage. I have been told that I must put the bins out on the appropriate day, but that a/ in bad weather it's my resonsibility to ensure there is no mess and b/ that it's my responsibility under highways legislation not to block or obstruct the highway on any occasion. If I don't use all the bins my rubbish won't be collected and that I should have no problem with storage as the two boxes, food waste bin and the residual waste bin take up no more space than my former single bin. What a bunch of idiots!”
