Find time to comfort those who are down on their luck
I WAS saddened to read The Herald's report on Monday of people dying without a friend or relative to look out for them. The numbers in this category are rising, and with the recession biting harder each year, I fear there will be even higher numbers to come.
It may be the people concerned are drug addicts or alcoholics. However, there may be some who do not come into either of the two aforementioned groups and may simply be depressed or have lost their job and subsequently, their family and home. There may be those who have been tossed out of a secure hospital type home and thought to be being looked after within the Care in the Community, which has failed many over the years. No matter how these people have become down and out, they still deserve better.
There has been a lot written in The Herald of late about religion and God. For those of us who truly believe, we do not care about those who prefer to come down on the side of scientists who bang on about 'humans being created from stones and fish, etc. Who created the stones in the first place? Who created the fish? Who created the vast universe, with its stars and planets? Sure, planets do collide and Big Bangs do happen, as people in Russia saw last week. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just as Christians are entitled to believe in their One True God and Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
Over the past 50 years or so, people have sadly pulled away from the church and the teachings of Jesus, due to so many things that now take place on a Sunday. If children belong to a football team, they are told: "If you don't come on a Sunday morning for practice or a game, you are out of the team!" Of course they are going to go for their place in the team, no matter.

Others work or shop in the stores. Others fill their lives with possessions, hoping that will fill the God hole in their lives. They keep changing furniture and soft furnishings, they are forever decorating their palace of a home, or having to have this year's registration car on their drive.
All the above mentioned activities have, over the years, eroded the fellowship of man which was commonly found in villages, towns and cities years ago.
I would implore those who are members of churches and chapels and see people down on their luck, spare them a moment and invite them to come into your church for tea or coffee and a biscuit. Over the years at the church I attend, we have had some lovely people come and spend time in the warmth of our building.
So if you witness someone down on their luck, no matter how they got there, please put them in touch with someone from God's house, where they, he or she, will find comfort and care.

“Another f*****g god freak!
Come on Herald, be honest about why these fruitcakes get such a mouthpiece.”
