My views on Tory politics
DON'T you just love Conservative Party selective memory politics? Here's a recent example. Chairman of the Conservative Party, Grant Shapps, said that something like 400,000 council properties had been lost under the last Labour Government. What he failed to remember was that 1.5 million council properties were lost under the last Conservative Government, since they were the ones who brought in the Right to Buy legislation that is the main reason for the shortage of council properties now available in North Devon and Torridge – and also the reason for the huge rise in rents charged by private landlords.
What about Conservative Party lack of detail politics? Conservative Work and Pensions Minister Iain Duncan Smith said that 300,000 children had come out of child poverty since the coalition came to power.
Child poverty is defined as being in a family earning less than 60 per cent of average wage. Hold on, average wage has fallen under this Government.
Assuming average wage was £25,000, child poverty would come in for families earning below £15,000. If average wage falls to, say, £20,000, child poverty would only come in below £12,000 – so children in families earning between those two amounts would come out of child poverty.

This means that with average wage being so low, some children have come out of poverty despite there being no improvement in the family situation.
