Exeter Express and Echo

NO more will the cry be heard 'I wish Exeter had a John Lewis!'

There will be no more trailing up to Cribbs Causeway or waiting for the post after an online order – now we have the store in Sidwell Street we can click and collect.

I have heard from some this week who claim never to have been in a John Lewis store, so they have no idea what all the excitement is about.

But for those who do know, and are fans of the retailer, the Exeter store has certainly been worth waiting for.

John Lewis has done Exeter proud.

I would venture to say that it is the best-looking John Lewis store I have ever been in – and very much Exeter's store with the one-off woven design on the windows to commemorate the city's wool trade heritage.

The building itself, even enlarged, was always going to be a challenge for the retailer but the store is full of nooks and crannies, special wall mounted fittings and 'barasols' (round display units at the front of the shop on most floors) to tempt the shopper to explore further.

Ages ago I asked if a celebrity was to open the store – the answer was 'No, the store's the star'.

Indeed it is.

“An unexpected consequence of the pavement work and one way traffic scheme is that the buses from Tiverton and places north now create a traffic jam as they struggle to turn sharp left before reaching the new John Lewis store. For those of us travelling into Exeter by bus this is an unwelcome delay to our journey.”

“It's funny that John Lewis have done all they said they would by the deadline date of tomorrow but ECC can't finish a bit of paving on time. OK there's lighting, traffic lights etc involved but they've been at it long enough, it's a joke.

How come nothing has been done to the exterior to the outside walls above Sainsbury etc.? It looks worse now than it did before now that there's a gleaming new John Lewis next to it.”
