Barnstaple's Green Lanes Shopping Centre has been recognised for its commitment to recycling by The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro).

The centre was recognised for its move to increase aluminium container recycling and the success of the town's Every Can Counts campaign, which was launched in December 2011. The initiative has been supported through a partnership with not-for-profit recycling enterprise Community Resources Devon, which provides day respite opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

Since the launch of Every Can Counts, the Community Resources team has collected three quarters of a tonne of cans for recycling, cutting the centre's waste to landfill by 2% year-on-year.

Green Lanes Centre Manager Jan Dayman said: "We already had an effective waste management system in place and were achieving excellent recycling results across a wide range of materials – in particular for cardboard and plastic. However, we were determined that there was more we could do. Every Can Counts was a simple and easy to use solution which gained great support from our retailers."

Alupro programme manager Ruth Meek said: "This is a fantastic achievement. These increased figures for the past year shows that there is always more that can be done when it comes to recycling, and Green Lanes are a fitting example of this attitude in action.

"North Devon already has a fantastic record for waste management and we hope that this award will encourage local businesses and the community to continue their efforts throughout the next year."
