FURTHER to the letter from T F Batten on January 28 re bus lane cameras, we too have been fined for being in the bus lane on Embankment Road on Monday December 3.

Despite giving the following reasons: We had been visiting friends in Plymouth that weekend and had just bought a new car from a Plymouth dealership the previous Friday and this was only the second time I had driven it.

The traffic was heavy and I was not only concentrating on driving a new car, but also trying to find the right road out of Plymouth. It was then we found ourselves in the bus lane having completely missed the bus lane sign, obviously we moved out of it as soon as we became aware of it. We informed the council that we are both senior citizens, having always lived in a rural/semi rural area unused to the rules and regulations of bus lanes. However our explanation was not accepted and we were fined.

I gather a Traffic Penalty Tribunal appeal form should have been enclosed with the Notice of Rejection from Plymouth City Council but this was not done so I may be too late now to take it any further. So much for welcoming visitors to Plymouth.

“So a couple of elderly drivers enter the Big City, probably not having looked at the Highway Code in the 40 years since they took their test, and get caught out because they can't deal with modern traffic conditions or read road signs.

The Bus Lanes are even painted red through there as a hint.”
