It is believed water ran off a nearby field and froze on the road. The Highways department gritted the road and put icy warning signs shortly after.
A fallen tree was blocking the road but it is not known whether this was the cause of the accident.
The road was opened at 1.05am this morning. The vehicle is registered to an Ilfracombe keeper.
